Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has taken a strong stance on streamlining cinema hall operations across the state, emphasizing better services for audiences and greater transparency from the film industry. In a recent review meeting with Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh, Kalyan addressed the ongoing theatre shutdown controversy and proposed a set of firm guidelines for the regulation of theatres and film-related business practices.

One of the key issues discussed was the recently proposed cinema hall bandh, which sparked concern within the state’s entertainment ecosystem. The Deputy CM expressed dismay at the chaos caused by this move and stressed that such disruptions must be curbed through strict oversight and governance.

Unified Process for Ticket Price Hikes

In a notable directive, Kalyan asserted that any proposal for ticket price revisions should be routed exclusively through the Telugu Film Trade Council. He urged producers not to approach the government in their individual capacities. Citing the upcoming film Harihara Veeramallu, he clarified that even prominent films must follow the official channel, ensuring transparency and fairness.

Overpriced Concessions Under Scrutiny

Another critical issue brought to the forefront was the exorbitant cost of food and beverages in multiplexes and single-screen theatres. Kalyan called for an official inquiry into the pricing structure of popcorn, soft drinks, and bottled water—items often priced higher than the movie ticket itself. He emphasized the need for routine checks by the concerned departments to ensure quality and prevent monopolistic practices in cinema concessions.

He added that reducing food prices would encourage more families to return to theatres, ultimately boosting footfalls and government tax revenues. The Deputy CM directed the Tax Department to review this issue comprehensively.

Political Neutrality in Enforcement

During the review, the controversial role of a Jana Sena Party leader and other industry figures in the theatre bandh announcement was addressed. Kalyan made it clear that political affiliation should not shield anyone from investigation or accountability. He instructed Minister Durgesh to explore all angles—particularly claims that a film producer and a politically connected theatre owner were behind the shutdown. He stressed that even if those involved are associated with Jana Sena, due process must be followed without bias.

No Room for Intimidation in the Film Industry

Highlighting the need to preserve a healthy and fair working environment within the film industry, Kalyan warned against creating a culture of threats and coercion. He said producers, actors, and directors must operate within ethical frameworks and respect institutional processes rather than resorting to pressure tactics.

To support long-term growth, Kalyan proposed greater collaboration between the government and key industry bodies—including the Producers’ Council, Movie Artists Association, and Directors’ Association. He indicated that the government is in the process of formulating a comprehensive policy for the Telugu film industry, and invited suggestions from these bodies to ensure it meets the sector’s evolving needs.
