Georgetown: India’s head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma have expressed support for Virat Kohli amidst his recent challenges, affirming confidence in his abilities ahead of the T20 World Cup finals against South Africa.
Kohli, the leading run-scorer in this year’s IPL with 741 runs, has yet to make a significant impact in the tournament, amassing only 75 runs in seven innings.
“Virat plays a bold style of cricket which occasionally carries risks,” remarked Dravid following India’s advancement to the final with a 68-run victory over England in the semifinals. “Despite today’s outcome, his approach was commendable. I sense a breakthrough performance is imminent. His dedication and attitude merit it.”
Captain Rohit echoed this sentiment, backing Kohli to deliver in the upcoming final. “He’s a seasoned player. Every cricketer faces such phases. We understand his caliber and importance in pivotal matches. His form isn’t a concern given his extensive experience.”
Rohit, who has scored 248 runs in the tournament with three half-centuries, has led India to a third ICC global event final within a year, following the 2023 World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.
Dravid praised Rohit’s leadership, emphasizing his strategic acumen and team rapport. “Words fall short to describe his contributions as a cricketer and as a leader.”
India’s collective effort has been pivotal to their success, according to Rohit, who highlighted the team’s adaptability to challenging conditions. “We adjusted well to the conditions, which was crucial. Adapting has been our strength.”
Regarding their bowling performance, Rohit commended spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel for their composed execution, noting their strategic clarity in hitting the stumps effectively.
Looking ahead to the final, Rohit emphasized the team’s focus on making sound decisions throughout the game. “Staying composed and making good decisions will be key,” he remarked, reflecting on their approach to maintain calmness under pressure.
India aims to deliver another strong performance in the finals, building on their current momentum.
