Jaishankar Engages in Bilateral Talks at UNGA, Focuses on Global Conflicts and Cooperation
New York: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a series of productive meetings with his counterparts from Spain, Cyprus, and Moldova on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The discussions centered on regional issues, including the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, while also exploring avenues to enhance bilateral relations.
Jaishankar is currently in the U.S. to participate in the high-level UNGA session, where he is scheduled to address the General Debate on September 28.
During the General Assembly session, he engaged in discussions with the Foreign Ministers of Bolivia and Guyana, as well as the European Commissioner for Climate Action.
In a notable meeting with Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno, Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction with their conversation, highlighting topics of bilateral cooperation and the geopolitical situation in Ukraine and West Asia. Bueno echoed this sentiment, emphasizing India’s role as an “essential global player” and a “priority” partner for Spain.
Jaishankar also met with Cyprus’s Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, focusing on the implications of the West Asian conflict and prospects for advancing their bilateral cooperation.
With Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi, Jaishankar discussed opportunities for collaboration in investment, education, and tourism, along with perspectives on the Ukraine conflict.
Additionally, Jaishankar renewed his partnership with EU Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra, commending his support for strengthening India-EU ties.
He also held discussions with the Foreign Ministers of Guyana and Bolivia, seeking to deepen bilateral relations across various sectors. Earlier meetings included counterparts from France, Panama, and Malta, showcasing a comprehensive approach to international diplomacy during his visit.
