Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar lauded the strong start by Team India in the opening Test against England, calling the centuries by captain Shubman Gill and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal “massive positives” for the touring side. India ended Day 1 on a commanding note at 359/3, with vice-captain Rishabh Pant (65*) and Gill (127*) set to extend the lead on Day 2 at Headingley.
Manjrekar, speaking on Match Centre Live, noted that India’s batting unit sent a strong message early in the series, especially with KL Rahul and Pant also among the runs.
“From the outset, I’ve said India have nothing to lose in this series—only gains. And Day 1 has already shown plenty,” Manjrekar said. “Gill’s first overseas hundred is a milestone of real value. Jaiswal has proven he’s not just a subcontinent wonder—he can handle English conditions too. KL Rahul was composed, and Pant looks close to his best again.” He also reflected on Gill’s captaincy debut, admitting initial skepticism but now acknowledging the young batter’s maturity and technical progress.
“When Gill was named captain, I was hesitant. I thought Jasprit Bumrah was the more logical pick. But temperamentally, I knew Gill wouldn’t let leadership affect his batting,” he said. “Today, he showed that the technical issues that held him back overseas are being addressed. The pitch was favorable, and the bowling wasn’t at its best—but you can’t ignore the fact that he capitalized brilliantly.”
Gill’s unbeaten 127 is his first overseas century and comes at a crucial time in his career, while Jaiswal’s century on his debut Test in England further cements his reputation as a rising star.MWith India firmly in control and set for a big total in the first innings, the team will look to convert this strong start into a match-winning lead in the days ahead.
