U.S. to Enforce Real ID Requirement for Domestic Air Travel from May 7, 2025
The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that beginning May 7, 2025, all air travelers aged 18 and above will be required to present a Real ID-compliant identification in order to board domestic flights. This long-anticipated update is part of the federal government’s efforts to enhance airport security and standardize identification across the nation.
According to the DHS, the Real ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets federal standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. Real IDs typically display a star, flag, or are labeled “Enhanced” to distinguish them from standard forms of ID. They will also be required for entry into certain federal buildings and military installations.
Alternate IDs and Restrictions
For travelers who do not possess a Real ID, alternative TSA-approved identification will be required to clear security checkpoints. These include:
- A valid U.S. passport
- Enhanced driver’s license (from select states)
- Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST cards
- U.S. Department of Defense IDs
- Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards)
- Border Crossing Cards
- Foreign passports
- Canadian provincial driver’s licenses
- TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
- USCIS Employment Authorization Cards
- Veteran Health Identification Cards (VHICs)
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has warned that travelers without Real ID-compliant documents or acceptable alternatives may face delays, additional screening, or be denied boarding.
How to Obtain a Real ID
To apply for a Real ID, individuals must visit their state’s driver licensing agency website to confirm required documents and schedule an in-person appointment. While requirements can vary slightly by state, applicants generally need to provide:
- Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. birth certificate, passport, or Green Card)
- Proof of Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with full SSN)
- Proof of residency (e.g., utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, or bank statement)
State DMVs and licensing agencies are urging citizens to apply well in advance of the May 2025 deadline to avoid last-minute complications.
Background
Originally slated for earlier enforcement, the Real ID deadline was postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges. The new mandate marks a firm shift toward full implementation of enhanced identification standards across the U.S.
Government Urges Early Action
The DHS and TSA are encouraging all travelers to check their current ID cards for compliance symbols and act immediately if their documentation does not meet federal standards.
“This is a critical step in strengthening our national security infrastructure,” a DHS spokesperson stated. “We advise all travelers to begin the Real ID application process as early as possible to ensure seamless travel after May 7.”
