BRS MLA T Harish Rao Questions Telangana Government’s Failure to Procure Cotton from Farmers
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA T Harish Rao on Monday criticized the Telangana government for its failure to procure cotton from farmers, raising concerns about the hardships faced by the farming community. In his statement, Rao pointed out that cotton farmers had played a key role in bringing the Congress to power in Telangana, yet they were now being neglected.
Rao specifically targeted the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), alleging that mill owners had refused to purchase cotton from farmers, leaving them without any viable option for selling their produce. He accused the Telangana government of laxity and blamed the state’s marketing department for its lack of coordination in handling the procurement process. The former finance minister also questioned why the ruling party was focusing on election campaigns in other states while neglecting the needs of Telangana’s farmers.
In a post on X, Rao called on the state government to urgently coordinate with the central government to ensure that cotton farmers’ produce reaches the procurement centres and is bought on time. He emphasized the need for timely action to prevent further distress among farmers, urging the government to prioritize the welfare of the agricultural community.
Rao’s comments come at a time when cotton farmers in the state are facing significant challenges, with many struggling to get fair prices for their crops due to issues with procurement and market access. The BRS MLA’s remarks reflect growing dissatisfaction among agricultural leaders regarding the government’s handling of the situation.
