Hyderabad: Political Debate Over Telangana Emblem Change Intensifies
Following criticism from BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) regarding the removal of Charminar from Telangana’s official emblem, BJP national general secretary and MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar responded, stating, “KCR’s son says Charminar is Hyderabad, but it only applies to him.”
Kumar further emphasized the significance of the Bhagyalaxmi temple in Hyderabad and questioned why KTR did not visit the temple during his recent visit to Charminar on May 30.
The controversy arose as the Congress-led Telangana government plans to unveil a new state emblem on the occasion of the state’s 10th Formation Day, replacing the current emblem featuring Kakatiya Kala Thoranam and Charminar. Chief Minister Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka have finalized a new emblem to reflect the state’s historical struggle.
Artist Rudra Rajesham is designing the new emblem, while Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani is composing the state song ‘Jaya Jaya He Telangana,’ set to debut on June 2.
CM Reddy intends to discuss the emblem change with political party leaders, although BRS has expressed opposition, threatening protests if the emblem is altered.
KTR’s protest at Charminar, denied permission by the government, underscored its symbolic importance as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a longstanding icon of Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, BRS leader B. Vinod Kumar appealed to AICC leader Sonia Gandhi to intervene against what he views as an attempt to erase Telangana’s history by CM Reddy.
The ongoing debate highlights differing viewpoints on cultural and historical representation in Telangana’s identity.
