Hyderabad Doctor Warns of Health Risks from Prolonged Sitting
Hyderabad: Dr. Sudhir Kumar, renowned for health advisories on platform X, highlighted the serious health risks associated with prolonged sitting, comparing them to the dangers of obesity and smoking. According to him, sitting for extended periods, a common requirement in many jobs, can significantly impact health and potentially shorten lifespan.
Dr. Kumar emphasized that engaging in 60-75 minutes of moderately intense physical activity daily, such as brisk walking, running, or cycling, is crucial to counteract the detrimental effects of prolonged sitting. However, he cautioned that even regular exercise may not fully mitigate the health risks if one sits for more than 13 hours a day.
The health hazards linked with prolonged sitting include increased risks of diabetes, hypertension, abdominal obesity, elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, heart attack, stroke, cancer, and premature death.
To minimize sitting duration and mitigate these risks, Dr. Kumar recommended practical strategies:
- Take 5-minute standing or walking breaks after every 30-45 minutes of sitting.
- Opt for standing work desks whenever possible.
- Conduct meetings and coffee breaks in a standing position.
- Reduce leisure-time sitting, such as while watching TV or using electronic devices.
Dr. Kumar’s advice resonated with many users on platform X, sparking discussions about the health impacts they have experienced from prolonged hours of sitting in front of laptops.
