Hyderabad: GHMC Mayor Calls for Community Action to Combat Dengue Fever
Hyderabad: In a concerted effort to combat the spread of Dengue fever, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi underscored the essential role of community involvement during an awareness program held at the Film Club in Venkateswara Colony on Thursday, July 25.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Mayor Vijayalakshmi highlighted that maintaining environmental cleanliness is pivotal in preventing the disease. The program, which was tailored for students designated as dengue prevention volunteers, emphasized the importance of educating the community about maintaining clean surroundings.
Mayor Vijayalakshmi specifically stressed the need to eliminate stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. She instructed the volunteers to ensure that old coolers, tires, and plant pots are free of accumulated water. Furthermore, she proposed the designation of Fridays as “dry days” to facilitate the systematic removal of standing water sources.
In her address, Mayor Vijayalakshmi also encouraged educators to integrate lessons on cleanliness and mosquito prevention into school curricula to enhance student awareness and participation in these health measures.
While the GHMC has rolled out comprehensive measures to curb mosquito populations, the mayor asserted that public engagement is crucial to the efficacy of these initiatives.
A report from the Telangana government’s Department of Public Health and Family Welfare indicated a rise in Dengue cases in June, with 113 reported cases, up from May’s figures. However, this represents an improvement compared to the previous year’s data, where May and June saw 188 and 284 cases respectively.
Conversely, Malaria cases decreased in June, with 9 reported cases compared to 21 in May, reflecting a reduction from the 29 cases in May and 14 cases in June of the previous year.
