Hyderabad: The metropolis is experiencing a respite from the scorching weather as substantial rainfall persists. On Thursday afternoon, May 16, heavy downpours inundated various parts of the city, disrupting regular activities.
Reports of waterlogging emerged from several localities, impeding vehicular movement and causing traffic congestions throughout Hyderabad.
In response, Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams have been deployed across multiple areas to mitigate waterlogging issues and restore normal traffic circulation. At the NTR Stadium vicinity near Nayeni Narasimha Reddy Steel Bridge, DRF personnel are actively engaged in alleviating water accumulation. Similarly, another team has been dispatched to Tolichowki to address the traffic disruptions caused by waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued precautionary advisories urging citizens to remain vigilant, refrain from seeking shelter under trees due to potential hazards, and avoid proximity to electric poles and wires. Helpline numbers 040-21111111 and 9000113667 have been made available for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation-Disaster Response Force (GHMC-DRF) assistance.
Rainfall Impact on IPL Match The persistent rainfall poses a potential threat to the scheduled Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans at Uppal Stadium on May 16. Measures are underway to safeguard the field from waterlogging, ensuring the feasibility of the match.
IMD’s forecast for Thursday, May 16, indicates the likelihood of light to moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) in specific areas of Telangana, encompassing Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajigiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, and Yadadri Bhuvangiri districts.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert, predicting rainfall for the next four days in Hyderabad. Substantial precipitation is anticipated across most areas of the southern and central regions of Telangana from May 16 to 19, with the peak expected on May 17 and 18.
During this period, temperatures in the city are projected to decrease to approximately 35 degrees Celsius.
