Hyderabad Metro Rail officials have announced a 10% rollback of the recently increased ticket prices, following an outcry from daily commuters. The revised fare structure will take effect May 24, offering immediate relief to thousands who depend on the metro for their daily commute.
Commuter Backlash Leads to Quick Reprieve
The original fare hike, implemented on May 17, saw the minimum ticket rise from ₹10 to ₹12 and the maximum fare jump from ₹60 to ₹75—an increase of ₹2 at entry level and ₹16 at the top end. Operated by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the metro faced strong pushback from passengers concerned about the added financial strain.
Strategic Fare Adjustment
Responding swiftly, Hyderabad Metro Rail management elected to reduce the newly hiked fares by 10%, a move designed to balance operational sustainability with commuter welfare. Under the updated scheme:
- New minimum fare: ₹10.80 (down from ₹12)
- New maximum fare: ₹67.50 (down from ₹75)
These adjustments will immediately lower travel costs for regular riders, making the metro a more affordable option once again.
Impact on Daily Riders
With an average daily ridership of over 400,000, the fare rollback could save commuters significant sums over time—particularly those traveling long distances across the city. The discount underscores the metro authority’s commitment to responsive customer service and sustainable urban transit.
