New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that India and Bangladesh have initiated negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement and outlined a forward-looking vision to enhance bilateral ties following talks with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Modi underscored Bangladesh’s pivotal role as India’s foremost development partner, emphasizing New Delhi’s unwavering commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
“We have charted a futuristic vision for collaboration between India and Bangladesh across emerging sectors,” Modi stated alongside Hasina.
During the discussions, both nations signed multiple agreements aimed at broadening bilateral cooperation, particularly in digital technologies, maritime affairs, and railway connectivity. They also formalized a shared commitment to a “green partnership” focusing on sustainable development.
The accord on maritime cooperation and the blue economy holds particular significance in enhancing mutual interests.
Modi further announced the commencement of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to deepen economic relations between the two countries. Discussions also encompassed bolstering defense cooperation, including initiatives in defense production and modernization of armed forces.
“We welcome Bangladesh’s decision to participate in the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative,” Modi remarked, highlighting India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy, Act East policy, Vision SAGAR, and Indo-Pacific vision, all converging at Bangladesh’s strategic location.
Reaffirming India’s dedication to realizing Bangabandhu’s vision of a stable, prosperous Bangladesh, Modi reiterated India’s steadfast support.
Prime Minister Hasina reciprocated, describing India as Bangladesh’s primary neighbor and a trusted ally, emphasizing Dhaka’s deep-rooted appreciation for their relations forged during Bangladesh’s war of liberation in 1971.
