Jaishankar and Wang Yi Discuss Disengagement Progress and Bilateral Ties at G20 Summit
Rio de Janeiro: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a significant meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where they reviewed the progress in the disengagement of troops in the disputed areas of Demchok and Depsang in eastern Ladakh. This meeting marked the first high-level engagement between the two sides following the completion of the disengagement process at these two friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Jaishankar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), shared details of his meeting with Wang Yi, a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) Politburo. He noted that both sides acknowledged the progress made in the recent disengagement efforts and discussed the next steps to further strengthen India-China bilateral relations.
“We noted the progress in the recent disengagement in the India-China border areas. And exchanged views on the next steps in our bilateral ties. Also discussed the global situation,” Jaishankar wrote.
This dialogue comes after both the Indian and Chinese militaries completed the disengagement exercise in Demchok and Depsang in October 2024, marking a significant step in easing tensions along the contested border. The agreement between the two nations had led to the resumption of patrolling activities in these areas after a gap of nearly four-and-a-half years.
As Brazil hosts the ongoing G20 Summit, Jaishankar’s meeting with Wang Yi highlights ongoing efforts to stabilize the relationship between the two countries, particularly in light of the sensitive border issues that have dominated their interactions in recent years.
