India Achieves Milestone with Stock Market Valuation Exceeding USD 5 Trillion
India has officially joined the ranks of countries boasting stock markets valued over USD 5 trillion, marking a significant milestone as the combined market capitalization of BSE-listed companies surpassed this mark for the first time on Tuesday.
As of 12 noon on May 22, according to BSE data, the total valuation of exchange-listed companies reached an all-time high of Rs 4,15,61,316.05 crore (USD 4.99 trillion).
The 30-share Sensex recorded a gain of 117.59 points, or 0.16 percent, reaching 74,065.61 today.
List of Countries with Stock Markets Valued Over USD 5 Trillion India now joins the following countries that have previously crossed the USD 5 trillion milestone:
- US (USD 55.7 trillion)
- China (USD 9.4 trillion)
- Japan (USD 6.4 trillion)
- Hong Kong (USD 5.5 trillion)
The market capitalization of all listed companies on the BSE first surpassed USD 4 trillion on November 29 last year, and it achieved the USD 3 trillion milestone on May 24, 2021.
The journey of market capitalization milestones on the BSE:
- Surpassing USD 1 trillion on May 28, 2007
- Reaching USD 1.5 trillion took 2,566 days by June 6, 2014
- Reaching USD 2 trillion on July 10, 2017, after 1,130 days from USD 1.5 trillion
- Surpassing USD 2.5 trillion on December 16, 2020, after 1,255 days from USD 2 trillion
Market Performance Today Indian stock markets opened with a decline today. As of 9:50 a.m., the Sensex was down 53 points or 0.07 percent at 73,900 points, and the Nifty was down 25 points or 0.12 percent at 22,503 points.
Internationally, markets in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Jakarta, and Seoul traded in positive territory, while Tokyo and Bangkok reported declines. American markets closed with gains.
Vaishali Parekh, Vice President-Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd, commented on market trends, stating, “Nifty has stabilized near the 22,500 zone in recent sessions, with active participation observed in select midcap counters. The overall bias remains positive, with expectations of sustaining levels around 22,400 and a potential breach above 22,600 to strengthen the trend towards the next target at 22,900.”
