BCCI Announces Key Changes for IPL 2025 Season Ahead of Opener
As excitement builds for the IPL 2025 season opener between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed four major updates for the upcoming edition. These changes come following a comprehensive Captains’, Coaches, and Managers’ meeting held at BCCI headquarters on Thursday, March 20, as preparations for the 18th season of the IPL intensify.
1. Saliva Usage Allowed for Ball Shining: In a significant shift, the BCCI has decided to lift the ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball, effective from the IPL 2025 season. The ban, which was imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, has now been removed after consultation with representatives from all 10 IPL teams. Bowlers will once again be permitted to use saliva as part of traditional ball maintenance practices.
2. Ball Change for Dew Impact: In a bid to address challenges posed by dew during evening matches, the team bowling second will now have the option to request a ball change once after the 10th over. The bowling captain can make this request regardless of whether there is visible dew or not. Upon request, the umpires will be mandated to replace the ball with another one of similar wear and tear. However, the bowling team will not have the liberty to select the replacement ball.
Umpires will also retain the authority to change the ball at any time before the 10th over if it is deemed too wet, out of shape, lost, or damaged. If a captain requests a ball change in the 11th over due to it being out of shape, the umpires will evaluate the request and approve it if deemed necessary. Further requests due to dew later in the game will also lead to a mandatory ball replacement by the umpires.
3. New Code of Conduct with Demerit Points System: Starting this season, a new Code of Conduct will be enforced, introducing a demerit points system and suspension points that will remain valid for a period of 36 months. This new system aims to ensure player and team discipline, fostering fair play throughout the season.
4. Expanded DRS for Height-Based and Wide-Ball Reviews: The Decision Review System (DRS) will see an expansion in IPL 2025, with the inclusion of height-based no-ball reviews and wide-ball reviews for deliveries outside the off-stump. This updated system will employ Hawk-Eye technology and ball-tracking to assist umpires in making more accurate and consistent decisions, enhancing the overall quality of officiating.
These updates promise to make IPL 2025 more thrilling, fair, and technically advanced. With these changes in place, fans can look forward to a season filled with exciting cricket, cutting-edge technology, and fair play.
