IPL 2025: Shubman Gill Stars in Gujarat Titans’ Commanding Win Over KKR
Gujarat Titans (GT) reaffirmed their dominance in IPL 2025 with a clinical 39-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens on Monday, led by a stellar 90 off 55 balls from captain Shubman Gill. The win helped GT maintain their top spot on the points table and further highlighted their consistency in the tournament.
Opting to bat first, Gujarat Titans posted an imposing 198/3, thanks to a solid 114-run opening stand between Gill and B Sai Sudharsan, who contributed a fluent 52 off 36 deliveries. Sudharsan’s knock also propelled him to the top of the tournament’s run-scoring chart.
In response, Kolkata Knight Riders struggled to build momentum and were restricted to 159/8, handing them their second consecutive defeat of the season.
Shubman Gill: “It’s About Finding a Way to Win”
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance over the last two matches, which he said were crucial for defining their position on the leaderboard.
“Very pleased. We spoke about these two matches — that they’re going to decide where we stand on the table. We just want to play our best game whenever we’re out there.”
Gill highlighted that his conversations with Sudharsan were focused not on survival but on strategy:
“We never talk about one of us staying till the end. We talk about how to score runs in these conditions and take the game deep.”
While acknowledging the win, the GT skipper also pointed out areas for improvement, noting that their performance wasn’t flawless.
“Even if you’re not playing the perfect game, you have to find a way to win — and that’s what we’re really good at.”
Ajinkya Rahane: “We Need to Be Brave with the Bat”
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane admitted that the target was achievable but lamented his team’s recurring struggles at the top of the order.
“I thought 199 was chaseable. You expect good opening starts, but that’s what we’ve been struggling with. We need to bat better, especially in the middle overs.”
KKR have yet to record a 50-run opening stand this season, and Rahane emphasized the need for a positive mindset.
“This format is about being brave. If you think about getting out, you will get out. Instead, think about scoring runs or hitting boundaries.”
Rahane also addressed fielding lapses that may have cost them vital runs.
“Fielding is in our control. If you can save 15–20 runs, that’s always better. It’s all about attitude.”
R Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan Shine with the Ball
GT’s left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore praised the surface for offering support to bowlers, especially in the second innings. He returned economical figures and spoke highly of Rashid Khan, who took 2 for 25 and played a pivotal role in stalling KKR’s chase.
“There was enough purchase in the wicket. That total was very good to defend. Rashid is one of the best T20 bowlers in the world — he’s getting his wicket-taking knack back.”
Looking Ahead
With this comprehensive victory, Gujarat Titans remain at the top of the IPL 2025 standings, while KKR find themselves under pressure to turn their campaign around after back-to-back losses. As the tournament progresses, both sides will look to fine-tune their strategies — GT aiming to stay ahead, and KKR in pursuit of consistency.
