Kolkata Knight Riders Sign Chetan Sakariya as Replacement for Injured Umran Malik Ahead of IPL 2025
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the defending champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), have secured the services of Chetan Sakariya as a replacement for fast bowler Umran Malik, who has been ruled out of the upcoming IPL season due to injury.
Umran, known for his blistering pace, had been picked by KKR for ₹75 lakh in the 2025 IPL auction, following his stellar performance with Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2021 to 2024. However, the injury has forced him to miss the season, leading KKR to bring in Sakariya as a backup option.
Sakariya, a left-arm medium pacer, has represented India in an ODI and two T20Is and has gained experience in the IPL. He has played 19 IPL games, taking 20 wickets, showcasing his potential as a reliable bowler. His inclusion will provide KKR with much-needed depth in their bowling lineup as they prepare to defend their title in the upcoming season.
In addition to the change in the squad, KKR has undergone several other significant shifts ahead of IPL 2025. Last season’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, was released before the mega auction and subsequently signed by Punjab Kings, where he has taken on the captaincy role. In Iyer’s absence, KKR has appointed Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain, with Venkatesh Iyer serving as his deputy.
Rahane, who led Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the recent domestic season, has been in remarkable form, scoring 469 runs in nine matches, including five half-centuries. His leadership and experience make him a formidable choice to guide KKR through their defense of the IPL title.
The team kicked off their preparations for IPL 2025 with a pre-tournament camp, which included a pooja ceremony at Eden Gardens. Rahane, along with the team’s coaching staff and players, participated in the traditional rituals, seeking blessings for a successful campaign. The team’s pitch curator, Sujan Mukherjee, played a key role in the ceremony as well, further emphasizing the team’s commitment to the upcoming season.
With a strong squad, experienced leadership, and the passionate support of their fans at Eden Gardens, KKR is gearing up for another thrilling IPL season. They will begin their title defense on March 22, with a home game against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
