IPL 2025: PBKS vs MI Match Shifted from Dharamshala to Ahmedabad Amid Security and Logistical Concerns
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced a change in venue for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 fixture between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI), originally scheduled to take place in Dharamshala on May 11. The high-profile clash will now be held in Ahmedabad, citing logistical reasons, according to a statement issued by the BCCI.
Anil Patel, Secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), confirmed the development, stating that the match will now be held as a day game.
“The BCCI requested us to host the match, and we agreed. The Mumbai Indians team will arrive in Ahmedabad today. Punjab Kings’ travel plans will be finalized later,” said Patel.
Punjab Kings Await Official Confirmation
Despite the announcement, confusion persists within the Punjab Kings camp. A team representative stated that the franchise has yet to receive formal notification from the BCCI regarding the change in venue.
“We have not received any information from the BCCI so far. We will finalize our travel plans only after we receive full clarity,” the official remarked.
In the meantime, Punjab Kings are scheduled to face Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamshala on May 8 at 7:30 PM, as per the original IPL calendar.
Security Concerns and Air Travel Disruptions
The venue shift comes amid rising tensions along the India-Pakistan border, with multiple reports of shelling prompting heightened security measures in northern and western India. These developments have resulted in the closure of airports in affected regions, including Dharamshala. According to aviation authorities, all commercial flights to and from the Dharamshala airport have been suspended until May 10 due to ongoing military operations.
While the BCCI has cited “logistical reasons” for the venue change, the broader security landscape and the operational status of regional airports are believed to have played a key role in the decision.
Implications for Teams and Fans
The late change in venue poses logistical challenges for both franchises, particularly the Punjab Kings, who must await confirmation before adjusting travel and accommodation plans. Fans who had booked tickets and travel for the Dharamshala fixture may also be impacted, though BCCI is expected to issue guidance on ticket refunds or transfers in due course.
This is not the first time IPL fixtures have been relocated due to security or administrative concerns. The IPL has, over the years, had to demonstrate flexibility in response to external circumstances, and the 2025 season appears to be no exception.
