Tehran: Iran Announces Six Qualified Candidates for Early Presidential Election
Tehran: Iran has officially announced the names of six candidates qualified for the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for June 28.
The final nominees are Mostafa Pourmohammadi, Masoud Pezeshkian, Saeed Jalili, Alireza Zakani, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi.
Mostafa Pourmohammadi, 64, previously served as Iran’s Interior Minister and Justice Minister, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Masoud Pezeshkian, 70, held the position of Iran’s Health Minister from 2001 to 2005.
Saeed Jalili, 59, was a chief negotiator in the nuclear talks between Tehran and world powers. He was a candidate in the presidential races of 2013 and 2021, withdrawing his candidacy in 2021 in favor of the late President Ebrahim Raisi.
Alireza Zakani, 58, is the current Mayor of Tehran.
Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, 63, is the current Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and was a candidate in the presidential races of 2005, 2013, and 2017.
Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, 53, is a former lawmaker and currently serves as the country’s Vice-President.
Following this announcement, the candidates can commence their electoral campaigns, which will continue until June 27.
Initially, a total of 80 candidates registered between May 30 and June 3 to compete for the country’s top executive position.
The 14th presidential election, originally scheduled for 2025, was brought forward due to the unexpected death of President Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19 in the northwestern province of East Azerbaijan. Mohammad Mokhber, the former first Vice-President, is currently serving as the Acting President in accordance with Iran’s Constitution.
