Iranian Defence Minister Visits Syria to Strengthen Defence and Security Ties
Damascus: Iran’s Defence Minister, Aziz Nasirzadeh, arrived in Syria with the goal of reinforcing the defence and security cooperation between the two nations. According to Syria’s Al-Watan newspaper, Nasirzadeh’s visit follows an official invitation from the Syrian Defence Minister, with discussions expected to focus on expanding bilateral cooperation in military and defence matters.
Upon his arrival, Nasirzadeh emphasized Syria’s strategic importance in Iran’s foreign policy, stating, “Everyone knows the important position of the Syrian Arab Republic in Iranian foreign policy.” He added that meetings would be held with both political and military officials to explore common interests, particularly in defence and security, while also seeking to exchange expertise.
The Iranian Defence Minister also lauded Syria’s efforts in combating terrorism and its pivotal role in the “axis of resistance,” a coalition of anti-Israel groups that includes Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, and various militant factions from Iraq and Syria. Nasirzadeh expressed Iran’s readiness to offer full support to Syria, reinforcing the longstanding alliance between the two nations.
This visit comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with Israel conducting repeated airstrikes on Syrian military sites and Iranian assets. The collaboration between Iran and Syria in this context remains a critical element of their regional strategy.
