In a noteworthy diplomatic exchange on Friday, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a productive conversation with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, focused on strengthening bilateral ties and advancing India-EU cooperation. Their discussion comes at a pivotal moment as India continues its proactive diplomatic outreach through Operation Sindoor, aimed at rallying international support against cross-border terrorism.
Taking to social media platform X, Jaishankar shared insights into the meeting: “Warm conversation with FM @ckombos of Cyprus. Discussed strengthening our bilateral partnership as well as India – EU ties. Appreciate the support consistently extended by Cyprus in combatting terrorism.”
The reaffirmation of Cyprus’s support carries weight, especially in light of India’s ongoing efforts to spotlight Pakistan-sponsored terrorism on the global stage. Cyprus has consistently stood by India on critical international matters, including backing India’s stance post-Pulwama attack and during the Shakti nuclear tests.
The enduring relationship between India and Cyprus dates back to the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1962. Since then, the two nations have maintained a strong bond marked by mutual respect and solidarity. Cyprus has extended support to India’s bids for key global platforms such as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Their shared history is further highlighted through numerous symbolic gestures. New Delhi honors Archbishop Makarios, the first President of Cyprus, with an avenue in his name. In return, Cyprus has recognized Indian icons through postage stamps commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s 100th and 150th birth anniversaries. A bust of Gandhi also graces the gardens of Cyprus’s Parliament, with the avenue in front named “Jawaharlal Nehru Avenue.”
As India intensifies its diplomatic campaign to build global consensus against terrorism, conversations like the one between Dr. Jaishankar and Minister Kombos reaffirm the depth of India’s enduring partnerships and the shared values that drive them.
