Justice Sanjiv Khanna Sworn in as 51st Chief Justice of India
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Khanna, marking the beginning of his tenure at the helm of the country’s judiciary.
Justice Khanna, who takes charge following the retirement of Justice D Y Chandrachud, will serve as CJI for a little over six months, with his term set to end on May 13, 2025. He succeeds Justice Chandrachud, who demitted office on Sunday upon reaching the age of 65, in accordance with the retirement age for Supreme Court judges.
Justice Khanna’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the Indian judiciary, as the country faces various legal and constitutional challenges. His leadership will be crucial in navigating these issues during his relatively short tenure.
