Arvind Kejriwal Rules Out Alliance with Congress for Delhi Assembly Elections
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has officially announced that his party will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently, dismissing any possibility of an alliance with the Congress. In a clear statement on social media platform X, Kejriwal asserted, “Aam Aadmi Party will be fighting this election on its own strength in Delhi. There is no possibility of any alliance with Congress.”
This declaration puts an end to ongoing speculation about a potential alliance between the AAP and Congress. Rumors had been circulating for some time that the two parties were in the final stages of negotiations for a coalition to challenge the BJP in Delhi. However, Kejriwal’s statement firmly closed the door on any such partnership.
This is not the first time Kejriwal has rejected the idea of aligning with Congress. He had previously expressed similar sentiments regarding the Delhi Assembly elections, and Congress had also announced its decision to contest all 70 seats independently. Delhi Pradesh Congress President Devender Yadav reaffirmed that Congress would fight the elections on its own terms.
Despite this, there had been persistent rumors about a possible seat-sharing arrangement between the two parties. However, with Kejriwal’s latest statement, it is clear that AAP will maintain its separate path.
The AAP’s stance on alliances has been consistent across other states as well. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal ruled out any tie-up with Congress in Punjab, declaring that AAP would contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
The AAP had also faced challenges in negotiating a seat-sharing arrangement with Congress for the Haryana Assembly elections, with both parties failing to reach an agreement.
As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, AAP has ramped up its campaign, positioning it as a referendum on the party’s governance. Kejriwal recently announced five guarantees for the city’s autorickshaw drivers, including a Rs 10 lakh life insurance scheme, Rs 1 lakh assistance for the wedding of a daughter, Rs 2,500 uniform allowance twice a year on Holi and Diwali, and free coaching for auto drivers’ children preparing for competitive exams.
So far, AAP has announced 31 candidates for the Delhi Assembly elections, which are expected to be a significant political contest in the capital.
