Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of neglecting domestic crises while maintaining a high-profile international presence. Addressing a gathering of Congress village unit heads in Telangana at LB Stadium on Friday, Kharge questioned the Prime Minister’s priorities.
“Prime Minister Modi has visited 42 countries, but he hasn’t found the time to visit Manipur, where people are dying, crying, and women are being assaulted,” Kharge said. He criticized Modi’s continued silence on the state’s ongoing humanitarian crisis and called out the lack of empathy from the central government.
Kharge also brought up former US President Donald Trump’s claim that he had prevented a war between India and Pakistan. “Why has Modi not responded to that? Why is he silent? He should have asserted India’s sovereignty and said we don’t need Trump’s intervention,” Kharge said.
Referring to the conflict in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Kharge questioned why the Prime Minister had not taken any substantial action despite repeatedly promising to reclaim the territory. He reminded the audience that while Indira Gandhi had split Pakistan in 1971, Modi has only offered rhetoric.
Kharge went on to accuse Modi of failing to show leadership in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam terror attack. “He didn’t even call an all-party meeting until we demanded it. And even then, he ignored Opposition leaders who had been sent abroad to represent India’s stance,” he said.
He also took a dig at the RSS and BJP, stating, “While leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi gave their lives for the nation, no one from RSS or BJP has made such a sacrifice. They didn’t fight for independence, and they aren’t fighting for democracy today.”
Highlighting what he called the failures of the Modi government, Kharge criticized its foreign policy, saying it had left India isolated and surrounded by adversarial neighbors. He also blamed the Prime Minister for economic instability and the erosion of law and order over the last 11 years.
Turning to Telangana, Kharge praised the state’s Congress-led government for fulfilling its promises. He pointed to welfare schemes for farmers, women, and gig workers, as well as the recent caste survey as examples of inclusive governance. “Telangana has become a model for the nation,” he declared.
He also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to securing central approval for the state’s bill to increase reservations for backward classes to 42 percent.
Concluding his speech, Kharge urged party workers to continue their fight to uphold democracy and the Constitution. He encouraged them to spread the message of “Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan” across every village and district.
