Ahmedabad: Mundra Port, the flagship of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), set a new milestone by welcoming the largest container ship ever to call at an Indian port, MSC Anna, the company announced on Sunday.
The MSC Anna, with a length of 399.98 meters—equivalent to nearly four football fields—is one of the world’s largest container ships, boasting a capacity to carry 19,200 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
“The arrival of MSC Anna at Mundra not only underscores the port’s capacity to accommodate mega ships but also highlights its critical role in enhancing India’s maritime trade capabilities,” the company stated.
With an arrival draft of 16.3 meters, MSC Anna can be berthed only at Adani Ports, Mundra, the sole port in India capable of accommodating such a deep-draft vessel.
During its stay, the MSC Anna is expected to exchange 12,500 TEUs, demonstrating Mundra Port’s efficiency in managing large-scale cargo operations.
In July 2023, Adani Ports, Mundra set a record by berthing MV MSC Hamburg, another of the world’s longest container ships, with an overall length of 399 meters and a capacity of 16,652 TEUs.
Adani Ports, Mundra’s record-breaking achievements continued in the latter half of 2023. In October, it became the first port in India to handle 16 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo in a single month.
“As APSEZ continues to expand and upgrade its facilities, Mundra Port is poised to play an increasingly significant role in the global shipping and logistics landscape,” the company added.
