Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) commemorated the anniversary of the Emergency on Tuesday by conducting seminars at party offices across the state.
During the event, the BJP recognized individuals who had been detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency period.
Senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra criticized the leadership of the Congress party, attributing responsibility for the imposition of the Emergency to their forebears, while asserting the current leadership’s commitment to constitutional principles.
Mishra highlighted that the Congress government had made over 100 amendments to the Constitution and accused them of misleading the public with false claims regarding reservation policies.
“During the Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA bloc disseminated misinformation to deceive the public,” Mishra remarked. He added that the BJP has planned a nationwide initiative to educate the public about the Emergency.
A major seminar is scheduled to take place at the Chief Minister’s residence on Wednesday. According to a BJP spokesperson speaking to IANS, former detainees under MISA from across Madhya Pradesh will be honored at the event.
June 25, 1975, marked the beginning of the Emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi government, which is remembered as a period during which democratic norms were suppressed and fundamental rights were curtailed in what is considered one of the darkest chapters in India’s seven decades of independence.
