In a bizarre legal case in England, a London businessman is suing Apple for Rs. 53 crore (5 million pounds) after his wife discovered deleted messages on their shared iMac, leading to their divorce.
The man, who had been flirting with sex workers via the iMessage app on his iPhone, regularly deleted the messages to keep his activities hidden from his wife. However, he was using the same Apple ID on his family’s iMac. As a result, the deleted messages remained accessible on the computer.
One day, his wife stumbled upon the messages, leading to their separation. In response, the businessman filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company’s lack of clarity on message deletion across devices caused his marital breakdown.
“When we delete messages on the phone, we think they are completely gone. Apple did not clearly inform users that messages would remain on all linked devices. If users were alerted with a message like ‘messages have been deleted on this device,’ the situation could have been avoided,” the man stated in his petition. He argued that the undisclosed retention of messages led to his wife discovering his deleted conversations, resulting in significant personal and financial loss.
The local court is set to hear the petition soon.
