Dr. Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Aly, the official spokesman for the Saudi Ministry of Health, announced the situation on Saturday, April 27, stating, “The epidemiological investigation, in close cooperation with the relevant authorities, has helped mitigate the risk of infection and reach the majority of affected cases.”
“We are currently closely monitoring 35 cases, with 28 individuals in intensive care units. We extend our wishes for the recovery and well-being of all those affected,” he added, emphasizing the importance of seeking information and guidance from official sources.
The incident came to light on Thursday, April 25, when the Riyadh Municipality received a report concerning a series of food poisoning cases associated with the Hamburgini restaurant chain.
Health oversight teams promptly initiated an investigation and monitored the situation, leading to the closure of all Hamburgini locations, branches, and the main catering factory in Riyadh by 10 p.m. on Thursday.
Furthermore, delivery services were suspended, and coordination efforts were initiated with key authorities such as the Ministry of Health, Food and Drug Authority, and Public Health Authority.
According to a report by Arab News, Clostridium botulinum is identified as the causative agent of the food poisoning cases.
In a video message posted on Instagram, Nawaf Al-Fozan, the founder and CEO of Hamburgini, acknowledged the chain’s involvement in the outbreak. Al-Fozan stated that although the municipality ordered the closure of their establishments due to food poisoning, they proactively canceled orders and shut down sales outlets.
He emphasized Hamburgini’s commitment to upholding global food hygiene and safety standards to ensure high-quality customer experiences. Al-Fozan also assured that they are collaborating with authorities to implement necessary measures and precautions.
