Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation across India, with a sharp focus on Uttar Pradesh, calling out the growing influence of feudal and criminal elements in the state.
In a strongly worded post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati said, “The dominance of feudal and criminal forces, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, has led to a rise in caste-based and communal violence, injustice, and displacement. These developments clearly indicate that the rule of law is not functioning effectively.”
Challenge for New UP Police Chief
The BSP supremo noted that the newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh faces a significant challenge in restoring public confidence, curbing crime, and upholding the rule of law. She emphasized that maintaining law and order is not only the responsibility of the police but also requires active cooperation from the ruling party and state administration.
“In this environment, the new UP Police chief must work proactively to control crime and ensure justice for all sections of society. The government and ruling party must also contribute meaningfully to the effort,” she stated.
UP’s Image at Stake
Mayawati stressed that Uttar Pradesh, given its population and resources, should be at the forefront of India’s multidimensional development. However, she expressed concern that negative perceptions about law and order are overshadowing the state’s potential to drive national progress. “Rather than being seen as a growth engine, UP is increasingly associated with lawlessness, which affects both its image and the national interest,” she said.
Concerns Over Public Education
In addition to law enforcement issues, Mayawati also highlighted what she described as the “pathetic condition” of government-run primary schools in the state. She warned that ongoing neglect of basic education would severely impact the future of marginalised communities.
“The deteriorating state of government schools is alarming. It reflects the lack of attention toward the educational needs of the underprivileged. If this continues, the educational future of Dalits, Adivasis, and other backward communities will be at risk,” she cautioned.
Mayawati urged the state government to prioritize improvements in school infrastructure and learning standards, saying that urgent reforms are needed to ensure equitable access to quality education for all.
