Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Highlights Role of India and China in Resolving Ukraine Conflict
Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni underscored the potential contributions of India and China in addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, northern Italy, Meloni’s comments came shortly after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During her address, Meloni emphasized the importance of international law and the detrimental effects of its breach, which she believes leads to increased chaos and fragmentation in the global economic landscape. She noted that economic globalization and adherence to international rules are mutually exclusive under current conditions, asserting that nations like China and India have a crucial role in resolving the conflict. “We must choose between upholding international law and accepting the fragmentation of global order,” Meloni stated.
Her remarks follow those of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who earlier this week acknowledged India’s role in seeking resolution during his speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. Putin expressed respect for countries like India, China, and Brazil, recognizing their potential to assist in addressing the conflict. “I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries will be genuinely interested in providing a helping hand,” Putin remarked.
Meloni’s discussion with Zelensky at the Ambrosetti Forum focused on the current situation in Ukraine, including the urgent needs of the country as winter approaches. Zelensky thanked Italy for its military and technical support and stressed the importance of timely delivery of weapons. The leaders also addressed the implementation of the G7 decision to allocate nearly USD 50 billion from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, and discussed the reconstruction of Ukraine, particularly its energy infrastructure.
Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating that it remains a top priority for the Italian G7 Presidency. She also highlighted the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Italy in 2025, which will further address reconstruction efforts.
In her subsequent address at the 50th edition of The European House – Ambrosetti Forum, Meloni reiterated her belief that global powers like China and India can play a pivotal role in resolving the Ukrainian conflict and stabilizing the geopolitical and economic landscape.
