Meta Takes Down Millions of Inappropriate Content on Facebook and Instagram in May
New Delhi: In May, Meta removed over 15.6 million pieces of inappropriate content across 13 policies for Facebook and more than 5.8 million pieces of objectionable content across 12 policies for Instagram in India.
On Facebook, 22,251 reports were received through the Indian grievance mechanism, with tools provided to resolve 13,982 cases. These tools included pre-established channels for reporting specific violations, self-remediation flows for downloading data, and avenues to address hacked accounts, Meta stated in its monthly report in compliance with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
For the remaining 8,269 reports requiring specialized review, Meta analyzed the content per its policies, taking action on 5,583 complaints. The remaining 2,686 grievances were reviewed but may not have been actioned.
On Instagram, 14,373 reports were received through the Indian grievance mechanism. Tools were provided for users to resolve their issues in 7,300 cases.
For the other 7,073 reports needing specialized review, Meta analyzed the content and took action on 4,172 complaints. The remaining 2,901 reports were reviewed but may not have been actioned.
Under the new IT Rules 2021, major digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users must publish monthly compliance reports.
“We measure the number of pieces of content (such as posts, photos, videos, or comments) we take action on for violating our standards. Actions could include removing content from Facebook or Instagram or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning,” Meta explained.
