IPL 2024: Punjab Kings knelt down early with a score of 14/4 before the big target set by Mumbai Indians. The brilliance of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma put Kings on the winning track. But with no wickets available or unable to score an easy 12 runs in 6 balls, Punjab finally got bowled out.
As a result, Mumbai won by 9 runs in the IPL match held on Thursday and breathed a sigh of relief. First, Mumbai scored 192 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Suryakumar (78 off 53 balls; 7 fours, 3 sixes) and Tilak Verma (34 not out off 18 balls; 2 fours, 2 sixes) played hard.
Harshal Patel took 3 wickets and Sam Karan took 2 wickets. After that, Punjab Kings were bowled out for 183 runs in 19.1 overs. Ashutosh Sharma (61 off 28 balls; 2 fours, 7 sixes) and Shashank (41 off 25 balls; 2 fours, 3 sixes) raised hopes. ‘Player of the match’ Jasprit Bumrah and Coetzee took 3 wickets each.
While Ishan (8) was out in the beginning… Rohit Sharma (36 off 25 balls; 2 fours, 3 sixes), who played his 250th IPL match in his career, took the team’s score to 54/1 in the power play of Suryakumar. Then the pace of runs increased as Surya’s aggression continued.
At the end of half overs, Mumbai scored 86/1. In the very next over, Suryakumar completed his half-century in 34 balls. But the 81-run partnership for the second wicket came to an end when Sam Karan, who bowled the 12th over… ended the game with Rohit. Mumbai reached hundred runs in the same over.
After scoring 115/2 in 14 overs, Mumbai scored 77 runs in the remaining 6 overs with Surya and Tilak playing hard. Captain Hardik Pandya (10) did little but Tilak’s brilliance contributed to Mumbai’s momentum. In the last over bowled by Harshal, David (14), Shepherd (1) and Nabi (0) were out and only 7 runs were scored.
Punjab’s innings started like this or not… it ended like that. At 14/4 in 2.1 overs, Peekallothu was in trouble. Openers Sam Karan (6), Prabhsimran (0), Roseau (1) and Livingstone (1) paved the way for the pavilion after Coetzee and Bumrah. At this stage, Shashank and Ashutosh entertained with sixes.
But Shashank’s exit at 111/7 in 12.1 overs sealed the defeat for Punjab. At this stage, Ashutosh and Harpreet Brar (21 off 20 balls; 2 fours, 1 six) added 57 runs for the eighth wicket. But as Ashutosh left for the eighth wicket at 168 runs, Punjab’s hopes of victory were dashed.
