One of India’s most revered visionaries, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, is set to be immortalized on the silver screen in a powerful biographical drama titled Kalam. The film, starring National Award-winning actor Dhanush in the titular role, was officially announced at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, drawing global attention.
Directed by Adipurush filmmaker Om Raut and produced by industry heavyweights Bhushan Kumar, Abhishek Agarwal, Krishan Kumar, and Anil Sunkara, Kalam aims to delve into the extraordinary life of the man who transformed from a humble boy in Rameswaram to the President of India — all while shaping the country’s defense and space frontiers.
Dr. Kalam, fondly remembered as the “Missile Man of India,” was not only a renowned aerospace scientist but also a poet, teacher, and the 11th President of India. His bestselling autobiography Wings of Fire continues to inspire generations with its message of resilience, innovation, and national pride.
Speaking about the project, director Om Raut said,
“In today’s world, where true statesmanship is rare, Dr. Kalam stood tall — above politics, prejudice, and personal ambition. His life is a beacon of how education, integrity, and indigenous innovation can build a nation. Telling his story is not just an artistic venture for me, it’s a personal honor and a profound responsibility.”
Actor Dhanush, who is known for his versatility and dedication, is expected to bring both emotional depth and intellectual gravitas to the role. The film promises to explore not just Kalam’s iconic scientific achievements — including the development of the Agni missile series and his leadership in DRDO and ISRO — but also his deeply spiritual worldview and unmatched humility.
Bhushan Kumar of T-Series added,
“This is not just a film. It’s a tribute to a man who changed the course of India’s scientific and political history. Collaborating with Om Raut and Dhanush makes this project incredibly special.” Dr. Kalam’s technical legacy includes spearheading the development of the indigenous Agni-1 missile, a nuclear-capable weapon system with a range of up to 1200 km. His contributions laid the groundwork for India’s current intercontinental ballistic missile, Agni-5, capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads with precision and power. Notably, Kalam also served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister from 1992 to 1999, guiding key strategic and defense initiatives during a critical period in India’s geopolitical evolution. His influence stretched far beyond laboratories and missile silos — he inspired millions as a statesman, scientist, and symbol of hope.
Kalam is being positioned as more than just a traditional biopic — it’s an introspective look at a man whose vision seamlessly wove science with spirituality, and whose leadership redefined the idea of service to the nation.
The film is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin shooting later this year.
