Narendra Modi was inaugurated as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday, June 9.
Accompanying Modi, 72 other leaders were sworn in as members of the new Cabinet.
Modi will lead the NDA coalition government after the BJP enjoyed a full majority in the previous two terms. At 73, Prime Minister Modi becomes the second leader to be sworn in as PM for three consecutive terms, paralleling Jawaharlal Nehru, who won the 1952, 1957, and 1962 elections.
Senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and Amit Shah were also sworn in as cabinet ministers, while party president J.P. Nadda returned to the cabinet after five years, signaling the Prime Minister’s emphasis on continuity and experience in his third term.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to them.
Modi, who first assumed the prime ministerial role in 2014 and was re-elected in 2019, was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Varanasi.
Dignitaries from India’s neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region — including Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Bhutanese PM Tshering Tobgay, and Vice-President of Seychelles Ahmed Afif — attended the ceremony as special guests.
In addition to political leaders and distinguished individuals from various fields, members of the transgender community and sanitation workers, along with laborers involved in the construction of the new parliament building, were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Approximately 9,000 people were estimated to be in attendance at the forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhavan to witness the event.
