The Monsoon Session of Parliament is set to commence on July 21 and conclude on August 12, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Wednesday. This session marks the first convening of both Houses—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—after a three-month hiatus, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on the opening day.

This upcoming session is poised to be politically intense, particularly in light of mounting demands from the Opposition for a special sitting. A coalition of 16 Opposition parties had formally written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week, seeking an urgent discussion on recent national security developments—including the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, a cross-border offensive targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Responding to these demands, the government has finalized the session dates, emphasizing that all concerns—including those raised by the Opposition—will be addressed during the scheduled Monsoon sitting.

The previous Budget Session (January 31 to April 4), conducted in two phases, saw the passage of several significant bills. Key among them was the Waqf Amendment Bill, aimed at modernizing the management of waqf properties through improved governance, streamlined survey and registration processes, and enhanced stakeholder empowerment. This legislation also repealed the outdated Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923, paving the way for a more contemporary legal framework.

Other major legislative achievements included:

  • The Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill, 2025, establishing a cooperative-focused university to support education, research, and capacity building in the cooperative sector.
  • The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, designed to simplify entry and exit laws, visa requirements, and foreigner registration protocols, reflecting India’s evolving global engagement strategy.

With contentious national security issues and critical legislative agendas on the table, the upcoming Monsoon Session is expected to be a dynamic and closely watched phase in India’s parliamentary calendar.
