New Evaluation Model for Class 12 Board Results: A Comprehensive Approach by NCERT
New Delhi: In a significant development for the Indian education system, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed a new evaluation model aimed at enhancing the assessment framework for secondary education. The recommendations, detailed in the report titled ‘Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards’, were released in July and advocate for a progressive evaluation strategy spanning Classes 9 through 12.
The report emphasizes a shift towards a more integrated assessment system, where the performance of students in Classes 9, 10, and 11 will now contribute to their final results in Class 12. This new model seeks to address disparities among various education boards by implementing a consistent evaluation approach across the board.
Progressive Assessment Framework
The proposed framework introduces a division of the academic year into two terms for Classes 10 and 12. According to the report, the assessment will combine formative (ongoing) and summative (end-term) evaluations, with a progressively increasing focus on summative assessments as students advance in their academic journey.
The detailed weightage for formative and summative assessments is as follows:
- Class 9: 7% formative and 30% summative
- Class 10: 50% formative and 50% summative
- Class 11: 40% formative and 60% summative
- Class 12: 30% formative and 70% summative
This progression culminates in a final weightage distribution for cumulative marks:
- Class 9: 15%
- Class 10: 20%
- Class 11: 25%
- Class 12: 40%
Term-wise Assessments and Evaluation Methods
The report outlines a detailed assessment process for Classes 10 and 12. Each academic term will feature a range of Classroom Assessments, including Portfolio Assessment, Self Assessment, Peer Assessment, Teacher Observation, Group Work, and Laboratory Activities. Additionally, the End Term Assessments will incorporate competency-based evaluations utilizing ITMS (Information Technology Management Systems), with teachers drawing questions from a designated question bank.
For Term II, the assessment will include formative components such as Project Work, Paper Presentations with viva voce, and Group Discussions. Summative assessments will comprise a common paper designed to evaluate a range of question types including Long Answers, Short Answers, Very Short Answers, and Multiple Choice Questions, all aligned with specific Learning Outcomes.
