The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is set to debut its first-ever Bachelor of Science (BS) programme in Chemistry, starting July 2025, marking a significant expansion of its academic offerings in the pure sciences. The new undergraduate programme will be open to students qualifying through JEE Advanced 2025, and admissions will be conducted via the JoSAA counselling portal.
Designed to blend deep scientific understanding with modern technological insights, the course aims to shape a new generation of chemical scientists equipped to lead in both research and innovation-driven industries.
A Fusion of Core Science and Cross-Disciplinary Learning
The curriculum has been carefully structured to provide in-depth training in fundamental chemistry, while also introducing multi-disciplinary exposure and flexible electives. The goal, according to Prof. S. Nagendran, Head of the Chemistry Department, is to “introduce multi-disciplinarity at an early level in chemical science education without compromising the depth of core chemistry learning.”
He added that the program addresses a long-standing gap: engineering graduates often lack the strong foundational science needed for research, while pure science graduates may miss exposure to engineering applications. This course seeks to bridge that divide.
Innovative Modules and Industry Alignment
A standout feature of the BS Chemistry program is its emphasis on practical-based learning and future-facing modules, including cutting-edge courses like “Artificial Intelligence in Chemistry.” Students will also benefit from the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem and research-driven environment of IIT Delhi.
The program was crafted through collaboration with academicians, industry experts, policy makers, and students from top institutions, ensuring it is aligned with emerging technological trends and real-world applications.
Diverse Career Opportunities Across Sectors
Graduates will be well-prepared for roles across a wide range of sectors, including:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Semiconductors
- Petrochemicals
- Chemical Manufacturing
- Defence & Aerospace
- Materials Science
- Chemical Consulting
- Oil & Gas
- Automotive R&D
By launching this program, IIT Delhi aims to redefine chemical science education in India, making it more responsive to the interdisciplinary demands of the modern scientific and industrial world.
