Mumbai Court Issues Non-Bailable Warrant Against Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in Cheque Bounce Case
A Mumbai court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in connection with a cheque bounce case. The warrant follows the court’s rejection of Varma’s plea to overturn a jail sentence imposed on him by a judicial court earlier this year.
The case traces back to 2018 when a company filed a complaint, alleging that a cheque issued by Varma’s firm had bounced. On January 21, the Judicial Magistrate (First Class) at Andheri, Y.P. Pujari, ruled that Varma was guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced him to three months in jail. The court also directed him to pay ₹3,72,219 to the complainant within three months as restitution.
Varma challenged the verdict in the Sessions Court, but on March 4, the court dismissed his appeal. In addition to upholding the jail sentence, the court issued the non-bailable arrest warrant and refused to revoke the imposed penalty.
The judge clarified that Varma still has the option to appear before the court and apply for bail if he wishes to proceed with that course of action.
The case has garnered attention due to Varma’s high profile in the Indian film industry, and it remains to be seen how the filmmaker will respond to the legal developments.
