Indian Army Strikes Nine Terror Targets in Pakistan Under ‘Operation Sindoor’ Following Pahalgam Attack
In a significant military development, the Indian Army on Wednesday announced that it has carried out precision strikes on nine terror-related targets located deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation, codenamed ‘Operation Sindoor’, was launched in direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead, including one Nepali national.
The strikes were confirmed in a press release issued by the Indian Army and through a statement on its official social media handle. “Justice is Served. Jai Hind,” the Army posted on X (formerly Twitter), signaling the culmination of a carefully calibrated counterterrorism operation.
Operation Details
According to the Indian Army, nine sites were precisely targeted, all of which were linked to terrorist infrastructure from where attacks on Indian soil were believed to have been planned and orchestrated.
“Our actions have been focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature,” the statement read. “No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and the method of execution.”
The military clarified that the operation was not directed at Pakistan’s state infrastructure but specifically at non-state terror outfits believed to be operating with impunity across the border.
A detailed official briefing on the operation is expected later today.
Background: The Pahalgam Attack
The strikes come in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where 25 Indian civilians and one Nepali tourist were killed in what was widely condemned as a brutal act of terrorism.
Indian authorities had vowed that those responsible would be “held accountable,” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reported to have closely monitored the operation from New Delhi in real time, in coordination with the National Security Advisor and senior defence officials.
Pakistan Confirms Strikes
Meanwhile, the Pakistan military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed the Indian strikes. Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of ISPR, stated that missile attacks were carried out by India at Kotli, Bahawalpur, and Muzaffarabad, condemning the action as a “cowardly attack.”
The statement from Pakistan comes amid growing tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations following the Pahalgam incident. However, Indian military officials have stressed that ‘Operation Sindoor’ was a controlled and targeted counter-terrorism response, not an act of war.
Strategic Implications
The strikes signal a firm shift in India’s counter-terror doctrine, showing a willingness to pursue targeted operations across the Line of Control (LoC) and beyond, while aiming to avoid escalation with Pakistan.
Defence analysts have noted that the Indian response reflects a mature, intelligence-driven strategy, one that aims to dismantle terror infrastructure while maintaining regional stability.
