Owaisi Critiques Railway Amendment Bill 2024, Highlights Delays in Hyderabad Rail Projects
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi recently addressed the Lok Sabha regarding the Railway Amendment Bill, 2024, and raised concerns about the ongoing delays in the construction of the Falaknuma and Shastripuram rail over bridges (RoBs) in Hyderabad. He pointed out that these projects, which have been pending for over four years, could potentially make it to the Guinness World Records for their incompleteness.
Owaisi expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of 10 to 15 lives during the construction of the Shastripuram RoB and emphasized the urgent need to complete these essential infrastructures. The Falaknuma RoB is of particular importance as it connects the historic old city of Hyderabad to Chandrayangutta, making it a crucial thoroughfare for local residents. In December 2023, Owaisi wrote to the South Central Railway (SCR), urging completion of the RoB. SCR had responded, indicating that the construction would be finished by July 30, 2024.
In his address, Owaisi also critiqued the Railway Amendment Bill 2024, highlighting its failure to address pressing issues such as passenger safety, staff shortages, and inadequate compensation. He stressed the need for systemic reforms in the Indian Railways, suggesting the establishment of an independent regulatory body, increased financial autonomy for zonal administrations, and stronger safety protocols to prevent incidents like the tragic Balasore accident.
Owaisi pointed out that over 53,000 safety-related vacancies remain unfilled within the railway system and criticized the government’s neglect of the country’s vital transport infrastructure. His comments sparked concern among opposition members, including Congress MP Manoj Kumar, who voiced fears that the bill could lead to privatization and reduced autonomy for Indian Railways.
