New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s significant role in global iPhone production, noting Apple’s intensified manufacturing efforts in the country during an interview with NDTV on Sunday.
PM Modi stated that one out of every seven iPhones worldwide is now manufactured in India, underscoring the success of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. He also emphasized India’s rise as the world’s second largest mobile phone manufacturer.
By 2028, approximately 25% of all iPhones are projected to be produced in India. Apple reported record first-quarter shipments in the country, marking a 19% year-on-year growth.
Apple is actively expanding its local ecosystem by establishing a network of Indian vendors, reducing reliance on China and generating employment opportunities. The company experienced robust double-digit growth in India during the March quarter, positioning the country to become Apple’s third-largest market within the next two to three years.
Last year, Apple shipped around 10 million iPhones in India, capturing a 7% market share. With over 850 million mobile phone users currently, India anticipates surpassing a billion smartphone users in the near future.
