Kyiv: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Highlights Mahatma Gandhi’s Message of Peace Amidst Ongoing Conflict
On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of peace and harmony as he visited Kyiv, Ukraine. His visit, which included a tribute to Gandhi’s statue in the ‘Oasis of Peace’ park, underscores the significant role of non-violence in addressing global conflicts.
Modi’s arrival in Kyiv followed a lengthy seven-hour journey from Poland. The Prime Minister’s visit comes at a critical time as Ukraine intensifies its military offensive into Russian territory. His diplomatic mission includes discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, focusing on exploring avenues for a negotiated resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
During his visit, Modi paid floral respects to Gandhi’s statue, highlighting the relevance of Gandhi’s universal message of peace. “Paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Kyiv. The ideals of Bapu are universal and give hope to millions. May we all follow the path he showed to humanity,” Modi shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Randhir Jaiswal, Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, also remarked on the visit via social media: “Remembering Mahatma’s timeless message of peace. PM @narendramodi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in the ‘Oasis of Peace’ park in Kyiv. PM underscored the relevance of Mahatma’s eternal message of peace in building a harmonious society and finding solutions to present-day global challenges.”
Modi’s engagement with President Zelenskyy will involve both one-on-one and delegation-level discussions. The focus will be on seeking diplomatic solutions to the conflict that has had widespread global repercussions.
