In a heartfelt address to the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated India’s rising stature in space exploration, deep-rooted cultural ties, and the remarkable legacy of the Indian diaspora. He emphasized India’s commitment to global progress while nurturing historical and emotional bonds across continents.

Highlighting India’s recent achievements, PM Modi proudly stated that an Indian astronaut is currently aboard the International Space Station. “We are now working on our own manned space mission, Gaganyaan, and soon, an Indian will walk on the Moon. India will also establish its own space station,” he announced. He also recalled the successful lunar landing of Chandrayaan-3, adding, “The site of its landing has been named Shiv Shakti Point—a mark of India’s cultural heritage and scientific excellence.”

India’s Heritage Abroad: The Girmitiya Connect

Calling the Indian diaspora “Rashtradoots”—ambassadors of Indian culture and values—PM Modi praised the resilience and contributions of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago, especially the descendants of Girmitiya labourers.

He announced a significant step forward in connecting with the diaspora, saying, “OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) cards will now be granted to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago. You are not just connected by blood or surname; you are connected by belonging. India embraces you.”

The Prime Minister also unveiled several initiatives aimed at preserving the legacy of Girmitiya communities. These include creating a comprehensive database of their migration, mapping ancestral villages in India, documenting settlements, and organizing World Girmitiya Conferences to celebrate shared heritage.

A Spiritual Gift and a Cultural Tribute

In a symbolic gesture, PM Modi gifted a replica of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and sacred water from the River Sarayu and Maha Kumbh to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

“You had once sent sacred water and Shilas for the construction of the Ram Mandir. Today, it is my honour to bring back a replica of the temple and holy water from Sarayu. Let it bless this land and its people,” he said. Referring to local traditions, he applauded the Ram Leelas of Sangre Grande and Dow Village, describing them as “truly unique.”

Pillars of Legacy and Inspiration

Recognizing the community’s stellar impact, PM Modi honored several iconic figures of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago:

  • Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the first female Prime Minister
  • Christine Carla Kangaloo, the current President
  • Basdeo Pandey, a farmer’s son turned Prime Minister
  • Renowned mathematician Rudranath Capildeo
  • Cultural icons Sundar Popo and Darren Ganga
  • Sewdass Sadhu, who built the iconic Temple in the Sea

“These stories of success reflect the spirit of India—of perseverance, purpose, and pride,” he said. “You, the children of Girmitiyas, are no longer defined by struggle, but by achievement and service. Perhaps it’s the power of your ‘doubles’ and ‘dal poori’—because you’ve doubled the success of this great nation,” he added, smiling.

Unity Beyond Borders

Reaffirming the depth of Indo-Trinidadian ties, PM Modi noted that India’s cultural heartbeat thrives in the Caribbean. “Benaras, Patna, Kolkata, and Delhi may be cities in India, but they are also street names here. Festivals like Navratri, Mahashivratri, and Janmashtami are celebrated with pride. Chowtal and Baithak Gana continue to echo the soul of India here.”

He concluded by noting that “Our bond goes beyond geography and generations. Together, we are writing a new chapter in history—one of unity, heritage, and hope.”
