PM Modi Marks Historic Day for Criminal Justice System with Launch of New Laws
New Delhi, Dec 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called December 3 a special day for India’s pursuit of speedy justice and efforts to break free from colonial-era mindsets. On this day, PM Modi, alongside Union Home Minister Amit Shah, will witness a live demonstration of the practical application of three landmark criminal laws in Chandigarh, marking a significant shift in India’s judicial landscape.
Ahead of the event, PM Modi shared his thoughts on social media, emphasizing the importance of the laws in ensuring timely justice for all Indians. He posted on X, “A special day in our efforts to ensure speedy justice for every Indian and, at the same time, break free from colonial mindsets. At 12 noon today, I will join the programme in Chandigarh to mark the successful implementation of the three new criminal laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.”
The Prime Minister also expressed his joy that these laws were being implemented during the 75th year of India’s Constitution adoption. The event, taking place at Punjab Engineering College (PEC) in Chandigarh, will showcase how modern digital platforms like e-Sakshya, Nyay Setu, Nyay Shruti, and e-Summons have enhanced law enforcement and judicial procedures. These platforms are designed to streamline evidence management, case tracking, and crime scene investigations, with the collaboration of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The newly introduced laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Indian Criminal Code), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (Indian Penal Code), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (Indian Evidence Act)—aim to overhaul the criminal justice system. PM Modi emphasized that these laws represent a clear departure from colonial-era provisions, focusing on justice rather than mere punishment. Their implementation nationwide, beginning July 1, 2023, seeks to improve the efficiency, transparency, and adaptability of the legal system to tackle modern challenges such as cybercrime, organized crime, and ensuring justice for all victims.
This reform marks a historic shift in India’s judicial approach, emphasizing modernized frameworks that address contemporary societal needs. As PM Modi prepares to dedicate the new laws to the nation, a significant security presence has been ensured in Chandigarh for the event.
