Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate ITU-WTSA 2024 and India Mobile Congress 2024 in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the International Telecommunication Union-World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (ITU-WTSA) and the eighth edition of the India Mobile Congress at the Bharat Mandapam. The theme for this year’s Congress is “The Future is Now,” reflecting the event’s focus on current trends and innovations in the telecommunications sector.
In a tweet, PM Modi expressed the significance of the day for the telecom industry, stating, “A big day for the telecom sector! At 10 a.m. tomorrow, the ITU-WTSA and the India Mobile Congress 2024 will be inaugurated. These forums are important, bringing together leading stakeholders from across the sector.”
Global Gathering of Industry Leaders
The ITU-WTSA, a crucial event in the telecom calendar, will gather around 3,000 industry leaders, policymakers, and technology experts from more than 190 countries. This assembly serves as the governing conference for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations agency focused on digital technologies. This marks the first time the ITU-WTSA will be held in India and the Asia-Pacific region, positioning the country as a key player in shaping global telecommunications standards.
Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the historical significance of the event, noting, “This gathering signifies a pivotal moment for India. We will be driving the future of global standards, ensuring connectivity for all and showcasing our tech prowess.” He emphasized the importance of fostering an environment where innovation thrives collectively rather than in isolation.
India’s Technological Advancements
Minister Scindia showcased India’s rapid advancement in telecommunications, particularly the rollout of 5G technology across 36 states and union territories in just 22 months, achieving coverage in 98% of all districts. He noted that the implementation of 5G is projected to inject approximately $450 billion into the Indian economy by 2040.
Additionally, Scindia mentioned the success of India’s Global Stack initiatives, including the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), Aadhaar, and DigiLocker, which collectively store about 6.75 billion documents for over 300 million users.
Showcasing Innovation and Collaboration
The India Mobile Congress is recognized as Asia’s largest digital technology forum, providing a platform for telecom companies and innovators to showcase advancements in areas such as quantum technology and the circular economy. The event will feature over 400 exhibitors and around 900 startups from more than 120 countries, with more than 900 technology use case scenarios and over 100 sessions led by more than 600 global and Indian speakers.
This year’s events offer Indian startups and research institutions valuable insights into developing intellectual property rights and patents, fostering a collaborative environment for innovation.
In summary, the ITU-WTSA and India Mobile Congress 2024 are poised to be landmark events in the telecommunications sector, underlining India’s role as a leader in global digital standards and innovations.
