Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his appreciation for the renaming of the Cultural Center in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, to ‘Thiruvalluvar Cultural Center,’ highlighting the deep-rooted cultural, linguistic, historical, and civilisational ties between India and Sri Lanka. The center, built with Indian assistance, was renamed in honor of the revered Tamil philosopher, poet, and thinker, Thiruvalluvar.
Responding to a post by the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote: “Welcome the naming of the iconic Cultural Center in Jaffna built with Indian assistance, as ‘Thiruvalluvar Cultural Center.’ In addition to paying homage to the great Thiruvalluvar, it is also a testament to the deep cultural, linguistic, historical, and civilisational bonds between the people of India and Sri Lanka.”
The renaming ceremony, held on Saturday, was attended by prominent figures, including Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious & Cultural Affairs, Sunil Senevi, and the Governor of the Northern Province. The Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka shared the news on social media, emphasizing the significance of the event.
On January 15, Prime Minister Modi had also commemorated Thiruvalluvar Day, paying tribute to the legendary poet and philosopher. Modi stated that Thiruvalluvar’s verses encapsulate the essence of Tamil culture and India’s philosophical heritage, emphasizing values such as righteousness, compassion, and justice. He further praised the Tirukkural, Thiruvalluvar’s timeless work, which continues to inspire and guide generations across various spheres, including ethics, politics, economics, and spirituality.
Thiruvalluvar’s contributions to Tamil literature and culture are monumental. His Tirukkural, a collection of couplets, is considered one of the most significant works of Tamil literature and is widely respected for its universal wisdom and ethical teachings. Thiruvalluvar remains a prominent figure in the cultural and philosophical landscape of India, influencing scholars and thinkers across generations.
