The tenure of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YCP) government under Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy witnessed an unprecedented level of dysfunction in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Despite their overwhelming mandate of 151 seats, the focus of the assembly sessions during the YCP rule seemed more fixated on discrediting opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu and his family rather than addressing key state issues.
Prominent YCP leaders like Kodali Nani, Roja, Biyyapu Madhusudhan Reddy, Anil Kumar Yadav, and others were often seen crossing the line, indulging in personal attacks and creating an atmosphere of vitriol and disrespect. The assembly sessions, rather than being a platform for productive discourse, became a space for chaotic verbal clashes, diminishing their legislative importance.
However, the recent shift under the new NDA-backed leadership has brought a much-needed positive reinforcement to the assembly. The toxic culture of name-calling and abuse, known locally as “Boothulu,” has been notably absent. Instead, the focus has shifted towards more meaningful discussions around policy-making, addressing the challenges of the first five months under the new government, and formulating ambitious plans for the future.
With Jagan Mohan Reddy largely staying away from the sessions and YCP’s reduced strength, the assembly has begun to function in a more parliamentary manner. The absence of constant disruptive behavior has paved the way for productive debates, with every discussion being more aligned with the state’s developmental needs. This transition marks a significant departure from the past five years of political dysfunction, offering the people of Andhra Pradesh a sense of hope and progress.
The current assembly, under Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, seems to be embracing the values of constructive opposition and governance, focusing on the state’s growth and well-being. It is this shift from chaos to a more organized and purposeful dialogue that the citizens of Andhra Pradesh have long awaited.
