Priyanka Gandhi Launches Campaign for Wayanad Lok Sabha Bypolls
Wayanad: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to kick off her debut election campaign for the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypolls on Monday, ahead of the voting scheduled for November 13. Taking to social media, she expressed her commitment to engaging with the people of Wayanad, emphasizing their historical support for truth, justice, and democracy.
In her post on X, she stated, “The people of Wayanad have stood with truth, justice, and democracy in the past and have worked to strengthen the spirit of the Constitution. They will continue to strengthen the Constitution and democracy and write a new chapter of development and progress. The zeal and enthusiasm of the people are worth seeing…”
Priyanka will arrive via helicopter at Meenangadi, where she plans to address three election rallies. Following this, she has scheduled four additional meetings on Tuesday, concluding her first two days of campaigning.
The state Congress party is aiming for a significant victory margin for Priyanka Gandhi, targeting a historic five lakh votes. Notably, her recent roadshow attracted a record crowd, showcasing strong local support, following her nomination submission, which was accompanied by her mother, Sonia Gandhi, and several national leaders.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to the people of Wayanad, Priyanka expressed her eagerness to learn from the community, stating it would be an honor to be part of a courageous populace that respects one another and stands resilient in challenging times. She concluded her message by expressing gratitude should they choose her as their MP.
The by-election was necessitated by her brother Rahul Gandhi’s decision to vacate the Wayanad seat after successfully retaining Rae Bareli in the 2024 general elections. The CPI has fielded veteran politician Sathyan Mokeri, while the BJP has nominated Navya Haridas, a young councilor and former software engineer.
In the 2019 general elections, Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad seat with a margin of 4.60 lakh votes, which decreased to 3.64 lakh in 2024. The constituency spans seven Assembly segments across Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, with Priyanka scheduled to address meetings in all seven constituencies during her campaign. Currently, four segments are held by the Congress-led UDF, two by the CPI(M), and one by Independent legislator P.V. Anvar, who has since parted ways with the ruling Left to form his own party.
As the campaign unfolds, all eyes will be on Priyanka Gandhi’s ability to rally support and secure a victory in this politically significant region.
