Rahul Gandhi Promises Legal Guarantee for MSP to Lift Farmers Out of Debt
New Delhi: On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, pledged that the INDIA bloc would assist farmers in escaping their debt burdens through the implementation of a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Gandhi’s remarks came as he congratulated farmers in Telangana on the launch of the second phase of the state government’s crop loan waiver scheme. With an outlay exceeding Rs 6,198 crore, this initiative will benefit approximately 6.4 lakh farmer families.
In a statement on X, Gandhi praised the Telangana government’s effort, highlighting that the second phase of the farm loan waiver aligns with their manifesto promise. This phase covers loans up to Rs 1.5 lakh, following the initial waiver of loans up to Rs 1 lakh, which was disbursed on July 18.
Gandhi criticized the BJP for allegedly keeping farmers in a debt trap and denying their demands for a legal guarantee on MSP. He asserted that while the BJP has neglected the needs of the agricultural community, the Congress is committed to providing substantial relief and support.
The launch event was attended by Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and his Cabinet, who oversaw the disbursal of funds for the loan waiver scheme. The move aims to alleviate the financial pressures faced by farmers and underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector.
