S.S. Rajamouli Ecstatic Over Oscars’ New Stunt Design Category; RRR Featured in Announcement
Celebrated Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has expressed immense joy over the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to introduce a new Oscar category recognizing Achievement in Stunt Design. The new award will be presented for the first time at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, honoring films released in 2027.
Adding to Rajamouli’s elation was the inclusion of a still from his globally acclaimed film RRR in the Academy’s official announcement. The visual, which featured among three highlighted stunt sequences in the Academy’s promotional graphic, served as a proud moment for Indian cinema on the international stage.
“At last!! After a 100-year wait!!!” Rajamouli wrote on social media. “Ecstatic for the new Oscars Stunt Design category for the films releasing in 2027! Huge thanks to David Leitch, Chris O’Hara, and the stunt community for making this historic recognition possible, and to @TheAcademy, CEO Bill Kramer, and President Janet Yang for honouring the power of stunt work.”
He concluded the post with a heartfelt note: “Thrilled to see #RRRMovie’s action visual shining in the announcement!”
The Academy had officially stated, “Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars.” This marks a long-awaited acknowledgment of the skill, creativity, and danger involved in stunt work—an integral yet often overlooked element of filmmaking.
Rajamouli, known for his grand visual spectacles and action choreography, is currently working on his next ambitious project, tentatively titled #SSMB29. Starring Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, the film is said to be a high-budget action-adventure with elements of mythology and history. A significant portion of the film has been shot in Odisha, and the cast includes Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in key roles. The film is expected to hit screens in 2027—possibly making it eligible for the new stunt category at the 2028 Oscars.
With RRR already having made Oscar history by winning Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, Rajamouli’s continued global presence and pioneering work in action cinema may once again bring Indian cinema to the world’s biggest stage.
